DISC REVIEWS By Bill Ellis
ellis@gomemphis.com
December 7, 2002 The following disc has two things in common: Memphis, of course, but also being available for the most part in Europe.
Based these days in Germany, Chicago blues guitarist Jim Kahr
could also apply for honorary Memphian status given his past tenure with Bobby 'Blue' Bland. Kahr certainly earns it on
"Nothin' to Lose" (in-akustik, 3 1/2 stars), a solid collection of original tunes recorded last summer at Ardent with producing great Jim Gaines behind the board plus the indomitable backup of drummer Steve Potts, keyboardist Ernest Williamson and bassist Dave Smith. Also lending their distinctive touch are singers Reba Russell and Jackie Johnson, whose harmonies make the soul track Hurtin' in the Morning the record's simmering highlight, and Memphis Horns legend Andrew Love, who gives Listen to the Message the smoothest of jazz veneers. Kahr's soft yet friendly voice holds the tunes down, though his guitar playing will make you come back for more. A crafted meeting of roadhouse and city stage, Kahr's six-string makes itself home in a variety of settings, from shuffle showpiece Big
City Struggle and the cool Paul Butterfield-like acoustic title track to the slide guitar licks and Bo Diddley beat of Keepin' It Hot! |
